Learning and caring together

Year 1

Welcome everyone to Year 1!

My name is Mrs Kentfield-Howe and I am the class teacher.

Miss Sweeney is the class Teaching Assistant

Year 1 is a year quite like no other, where children build on their skills from the Foundation stage, developing new knowledge to ensure that the basics of Reading, Writing, and Maths are embedded. In Year 1, we are lucky to have 2 classrooms giving the children ample space to learn and grow. During the day the children are given lots of ‘hands on’ practical, fun, and engaging opportunities to be creative with their own learning whilst being challenged in a stimulating and nurturing environment. We ask all children to think about their learning and question themselves with targets and goals to achieve. We believe in setting realistic achievements to ensure a healthy growth mindset and ensure children are happy, enthusiastic, and motivated learners. At the end of the year, it is overwhelming to look back at where the children had started and how far they have thrived with their learning and development.

Phonic Screening Test

In June, your children will complete the Phonic Screening Test. Phonics is a crucial element of our curriculum in Year 1 and we aim to equip all children with the skills and knowledge needed to complete the test. To assist us with this, please complete daily reading at home with your children and practise the sounds given out at the end of the week. highlighted on the phonic phase mats which are sent home each week.

Year 1 Long Term Plan

Throughout the year, we teach a variety of stimulating and exciting topics to engage the children in their learning. We aim for all pupils to develop a lifelong love of learning and develop the basic skills and knowledge to prepare our children for Year 2.
