Why is PE successful at Handale?

  • In 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 we achieved a Gold School Games Mark award for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport.
  • All children engage in two hours of timetabled physical exercise per week.
  • We have a range of after school sports club delivered all year round.
  • As a school, we work with the East Cleveland School Sports Partnership, who deliver high quality PE lessons and run local competitions for our children to compete in.
  • All children get an opportunity to participate in an external competition throughout their time at Handale.
  • Children have shared their passion and love for PE through pupil voice and they explained how participating in PE and after school physical activity clubs is fun and rewarding.
  • We celebrate our successful school years by holding sport weeks in June, where all children have the opportunity to try unique sports, such as: archery, climbing, judo and tchoukball.

Our Vision and Intent for PE at Handale…

Handale Primary School believes that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. Our vision is to create a broad and balanced Physical Education Curriculum and to ensure we provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Progressive learning objectives, combined with high quality varied teaching approaches endeavour to provide stimulating, enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all pupils. Through the selection of suitably differentiated and well developed tasks, it is intended that pupils, irrespective of their innate ability, will enjoy success, and be motivated to further develop their individual potential. We believe with this approach, our children will strive to success in Physical Education irrespective of the community outside of school.

  • Children embed how to cooperate with others, work as part of a team and understand fairness.
  • Provide PPG children and targeted ‘less active children’ more opportunity to attend a change 4 life club.
  • Spend an hour a week coaching and mentoring with MFC Foundation.
  • Plan a sports week with a range of sporting activities.

Our curriculum aim is to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children across our school. This is achieved not only through two hours of PE a week but in extra-curricular activities outside of school. Within our lessons, children are taught; team work, self-discipline, leadership skills and that you need to take ownership and responsibility of your own health and fitness the older you become. Our aim is to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an effective way in order for them to live healthy lives. Also, we deliver a wide range of sporting activities so our children can find a passion for health and fitness through a range of different activities.

We follow the National Curriculum Objectives for PE at Handale…

The purpose of PE is to deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

In key stage 1 pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities,
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending,
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns.
    In key stage 2 pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination,
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending,
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics],
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns,
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team,
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
    Also at Handale, all children are given the opportunity to be provided with swimming instruction.
    In particular, pupils should be taught to:
  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres,
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke],
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
