SPAG (15 minutes): Prefixes
Prefixes are a group of letters which are added to a root word to make a new word. Prefixes can tell us useful information about a root word. Today you are going to be looking at using the prefixes 'mid' 'pre' 'fore' and 'non'.
Mid - means middle.
Pre and fore - means before.
Non - means not.
Remember when you add a prefix, the spelling of the root word does not change. Here are some examples.
midfield = the pre fix is mid and the root word is field.
preview = the pre fix is pre and the root word is view.
forethought = the pre fix is fore and the root word is thought.
nonadjustable = the pre fix is non and the root word is adjustable.

This week we are going to be creative and have a little fun with our English. You are going to create your own story board today using the cartoon in the video below. I want you to recite the story using a range of sentence types and upper level vocabulary. Think about all the openers you can use and all the skills that make your writing exciting. For today's task, I want you to explore mechanical systems. A mechanism is used in a mineshaft to turn and bring up the materials that are collected from the mine. Where might you find a mine where you live?
We are going to be exploring using a pulley mechanism mixed with a gear mechanism. Watch this video to find out more.
Task -
Draw a mechanism which would pull materials up from a mine and label it. - How does it work?
- How will we use a cog in our mineshaft?
- How does it pull up the materials?
- Why was this useful in mining?
Challenge - Can you make your mechanism in your spare time using materials at home. Can you use a range of materials: cardboard, paper, straw, rope and twigs. Use your straw, rope or twigs to turn the mechanism. Can you get it to work?
