Good morning, year 3. I hope that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable weekend and are ready for another week of home learning. I am glad to see that you haven't forgotten our school rule to 'work hard and aim high' while you are at home. I have been impressed with your effort and the work that you have been producing. Keep it up this week.
Our top spellers on spelling shed for last week were:
2. Elyssa
3. Theo
Well done! You have all been awarded 5 pride points.
As a class, we came third in the school league table again last week. Let's try really hard to achieve 2nd or 1st place this week.
Well done to those who have been sending me pictures of their reading records to show me that you have been continuing to read 3 times at home. Please send pictures of your reading records with your work on a Friday. If you need a new book, you can use the Oxford Owl website to access books or you can arrange with me or Mrs Brodie to collect a new book from school.

Today, you have 3 tasks:
English
SPAG |
Today in SPAG, you will be focussing on writing question sentences. Remember, a question sentence should start with a capital letter and end with a ? (question mark).
I want you to write question sentences that would give a particular answer. Look at the example below:
Write a question sentence that would give you the answer "It's in my bag." Where is your purse?
Now think of question sentences where someone might reply with the following answers.
English |
For the next three days in English, we will be working on a whole school writing theme. You will be writing letters to a child in 2030 about your experiences in 2020.
Today, I would like you to think back and reflect on last year and generate ideas for your writing. To do this, I would like you to create a collage showing all of the things that remind you of the year 2020. Your collage might include drawings, pictures or newspaper clippings of people wearing face-masks, following social distancing rules, using hand sanitiser, walking down empty streets, doing some home learning or general lockdown activities – or perhaps there’s something you’d like to include that is more personal to you. What activities did you do to have fun during lockdown? Did you celebrate anything? Did you enjoy clapping for carers? Remember, 2020 is not just defined by the pandemic. What else happened in your life during 2020 that you would like to mention?
Maths
Maths Meeting |
For today's maths meeting, I would like you to complete the calculations mentally using your learning from last week.
557 + 5
743 + 9
452 + 40
783 + 30
Now, order your answers from smallest to greatest.
Maths |
This week in maths, we will be focussing on mental subtraction. Today we will be subtracting 1 digit numbers from 3 digit numbers. There are two parts to your maths lesson today. You need to watch the first video to complete the first part of your learning and then you will need to watch video 2 to be able to complete the final part of today's maths lesson.
Challenge:
Reading
Later this week, we will be using a new book to base our adventure writing on in our English lessons. The book is called Quest and it is by Aaron Becker. This book is a picture book and has no words so it is up to the reader to look at the pictures and work out what is happening. This book is a sequel to the book 'Journey' which you may remember from our transition weeks in July if you attended those days. Here is a link to Journey if you would like to remind yourself what happened. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRsmuveKWuk
For your reading session today, I have given you some of the images from the book and I would like you to answer the following questions for each one.
Watch the video below which gives more details about how to complete the task.
Now that you have watched the full video of the story, has it changed any of your answers from today's work? Now, summarise what happens in the story verbally to an adult.
Geography
Today, you will be learning about earthquakes. Watch the videos and listen very carefully. You will need to know plenty of earthquake facts to complete today's geography activity.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z849q6f/articles/zj89t39
Now that you have watched the videos about earthquakes, I would like you to use your earthquake knowledge to make your own board game. It could be in the style of monopoly, snakes and ladders or one of your own ideas. Your board game needs to include earthquake questions. If a player gets a question incorrect they miss a go. Make sure you write the answers to your questions on a separate piece of paper. I have taken a picture of the board game that I have started making. I have included some earthquake questions but I still need to add more. I have also included boxes which tell players to move forwards, backwards or to miss a go. Remember to write the answers to your earthquake questions on another sheet of paper so that you can check your answers as you play.
Well done, you have completed today's home learning. Now, it is time to relax with a story. Which stories have you been enjoying at home?
Don't forget to send your work to year3@handale.rac.sch.uk. I am looking forward to seeing the work that you have produced today.
